  • Raise awareness of need for standards. Call a meeting of users. Talk about it. Get key players on your side.
  • Be prepared for destructive criticisms.
  • Research all possible places for ideas, and draft up a set of standards.
  • Use a standard format for describing the standards.
  • Review, revise and agree the final document with the people who are going to have to use it!
  • Prove the value of standards by measuring their effect.
  • Use code reviews to ensure they are being used.
